16 month check-up for my son...when to start talking?

We had our 16 month check-up. It went great. My son was 24.13 lbs and 32.5". We seem to be on track, however he is still not saying his 5-10 words. The doctor said not to worry as long as he understands small tasks without being guided. I wish I knew how to help him along but they say there is not much you can do, plus he is a boy and he will talk when ready. Any ideas on helping him along or similar problems?
